Stranger Things: Tales from ’85

With less then a month to go until Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 arrives on Netflix, a new trailer and poster have landed online for the animated spinoff series which takes between the second and third seasons of the the hit supernatural drama and follows the adventures of the young heroes of Hawkins’ Eleven, Mike, Will, Dustin, Lucas, and Max as a snowstorm hits their town.

The series features the voice talents of Brooklyn Davey Norstedt as Eleven, Jolie Hoang-Rappaport as Max, Luca Diaz as Mike, Elisha “EJ” Williams as Lucas, Braxton Quinney as Dustin, Ben Plessala as Will, Brett Gipson as Hopper, Jeremy Jordan as Steve, Janeane Garofalo as Anna Baxter, Lou Diamond Phillips as Daniel Fischer, Robert Englund as Cosmo, Alysia Reiner as Karen Wheeler, Alessandra Antonelli as Nancy Wheeler, Valeria Rodriguez as Rosario and Jack Griffo as Jeff. Check out the trailer below…

Two other things that bother me about the trailer.

First, I really dislike the animation style. Why did Netflix go with a CGI look when they had a golden opportunity to make this a retro ‘80s style cartoon? You can use modern animation techniques and technology to create a vintage look, invoking old Saturday morning cartoons like He-Man, Transformers, Thundercats and G.I. Joe. Shows like Unicorn Warriors Eternal or even Invincible manage to capture that old-school 2D animation style while still looking crisp and modern.

Honestly, this art-style looks like a Telltale Games video game – a perfectly fine style for those games, but off-putting for a show all about the ’80s. Imagine if this trailer had the same art style as Dragon’s Lair instead.

While the main show often referenced movies like Ghostbusters and E.T. and had a very Goonies vibe, the spinoff could lean in on the animated classics of the ’80s. Matching that aesthetic would make this far more appealing, while opening up opportunities to expand the cultural references and Easter Eggs.

Second, it’s really very strange to watch these characters when their voices sound nothing at all like the original characters. Some sound better than others, but some – like Hopper – aren’t even close. It’s very off-putting, and I don’t even blame the voice actors for this. This was a creative choice that the creators of Tales From ‘85 made, but it’s very jarring. I think Mike sounds pretty close to Mike, and Steve is reasonably close to Steve, but that’s about it.

The voice cast includes:

  • Brooklyn Davey Norstedt as Eleven
  • Jolie Hoang-Rappaport as Max
  • Luca Diaz as Mike
  • Elisha “EJ” Williams as Lucas
  • Braxton Quinney as Dustin
  • Benjamin Plessala as Will
  • Brett Gipson as Hopper
  • Jeremy Jordan as Steve

Return to Hawkins with Stranger Things: Tales From ’85, an exciting new animated series from showrunner Eric Robles and executive producers the Duffer Brothers. In the winter of 1985, snow blankets the town and the horrors of the Upside Down are finally fading. Our heroes Eleven, Mike, Will, Dustin, Lucas, and Max have settled back into a normal life of D&D, snowball fights, and quiet days. But beneath the ice, something terrifying has awakened. Could it be from the Upside Down? From the depths of Hawkins Lab? Or from somewhere else entirely? Our heroes must race to solve this mystery and save Hawkins in this new story set in the Stranger Things universe.

Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 arrives on Netflix on April 23rd.
